The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is on Liberty Island at the entrance to New York Harbor.

Nov. 4 - Some 25 million European immigrants to the United States arrived by ship in New York Harbor between 1892 and 1924. For many, the Statue of Liberty was their first sight of the United States. Originally constructed in 1876 to commemorate 100 years of friendship between France and the U.S., the statue came to symbolize liberty and freedom as well as international friendship.

Fireworks go off in New York Harbor to celebrate the 125th birthday of the Statue of Liberty in New York on Oct. 28, 2011.

The Statue of Liberty (official name: The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World) celebrated its 125th anniversary last month. To mark the occasion, 125 people from 46 countries became citizens by swearing an oath of allegiance to the United States at the base of the statue. The West Point Glee Club performed musical numbers, and fireworks lit up the evening sky.

The United States and Japan share these common values of liberty and freedom. We both value democracy and individual rights such as freedom of speech and freedom to practice religion.

People are looking out the windows in her hat.

I hope that many Japanese people will visit the Statue of Liberty when they go to New York. For while "Lady Liberty" may have turned 125 years old, she is aging gracefully, and we will continue to cherish the liberty and freedom that she symbolizes.

Until next time,

Jim

I have visited the Statue of Liberty three times. I remembered that I climbed up to the crown top and had a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean, welcoming immigrants from Europe. They came to the US seeking for the American dreams.

I think the Statue of Liberty is a big icon of the US. She ensure the American citizens for freedom of academic fulfillment.
