Japan's Food Culture

July 30 - One aspect of life in Tokyo that Ann and I both appreciate is sampling the broad array of delicious food that Tokyo establishments have to offer. Whether dining in small neighborhood restaurants or buying food in a grocery or a large department store, I always find the quality and selection of food amazing. We are somewhat surprised, however, that imported food products generate so much worried discussion in the media. I think the reason is that many Japanese government officials have long presented Japan's declining food self-sufficiency as a problem. While access to adequate, safe and reliable food is a serious question for every nation, Japan can achieve real food security by relying on two pillars: domestic production and imports.

This "two pillar" strategy recognizes that imported agricultural products are legitimate and wholesome contributors to the well-being of Japan's food culture. Every time Ann and I enjoy a delicious dinner of "shabu shabu" I appreciate the Japanese "wagyu" farmers who have been feeding their cattle on corn and soybeans from the United States. In my job, I get the chance to meet many Japanese businessmen who have developed trading and investment relationships with reliable American suppliers. These businessmen already understand that imports complement domestic production to bolster Japan's food security.

Japan's agricultural production will always play its essential role in Japan's food security, but I believe that Japan is better served by also appreciating the important role of imported food from reliable suppliers. As Japan's most important and most reliable agricultural suppliers, U.S. farmers stand ready with Japanese farmers to continue fulfilling our role in feeding Japan together.

Until next time,

Jim
