My Visit to Sasebo

Aug. 18 - I always enjoy visiting Sasebo in Nagasaki prefecture because in some ways it reminds me of my hometown in San Diego. Sasebo and San Diego are sister ports, which is fitting because both cities boast beautiful natural harbors that host a United States Navy base.

As a San Diegan I understand the critical role of local communities that host U.S. military bases. When I was growing up, I attended school with children of U.S. Navy sailors and played under skies where carrier-based aircraft practiced their maneuvers.

The people of San Diego recognize that the bases are an integral part of our community. However, they also recognize that there are pluses and minuses to living in a base-hosting community. As occurs in Japan, there are many discussions between city and base officials in order to live successfully side by side. These communications are essential for developing a mutually beneficial relationship.

Captain Francis X. Martin, Commander of Fleet Activities at Sasebo, told me that the Japanese Self Defense Forces and Japanese base workers both play a critical role in helping the U.S. Navy fulfill its mission in the Western Pacific. He pointed out a memorial plaque on the base that extolled the contributions of the thousands of Japanese base workers. I also met many members of the Self Defense Forces who took justifiable pride in their contributions to the alliance.

My host in Sasebo was the Japan-America Society. They greeted me warmly and hosted me to a wonderful reception where I was able to meet over 100 Society members. Many of them were proud of their city's role as host to a U.S. military presence that helps preserve the peace and stability in the region. I hope to return soon to Sasebo to renew my relationship with so many new friends.

Until next time,

Jim
