Aug. 20 - Today is Ambassador John Roos's first day at work in Tokyo. When he presents his letter of credentials to His Majesty the Emperor, I will step down as Charge to resume my duties as Deputy Chief of Mission.

I am very happy to have Ambassador Roos as a boss. I had a chance to meet him, his wife Susie and son David in California last month where they invited me to lunch at their house in Northern California. Ambassador Roos was full of ideas to further strengthen U.S.-Japan relations in areas such as education, "clean" technology for the environment, innovation and entrepreneurship. He is extremely excited to come to Japan and is keenly interested in getting to meet its people.

Before meeting Ambassador Roos, I knew that he was a very successful CEO of Silicon Valley's largest law firm. I found him, however, to be quite humble. His family is also very important to him. I am sure you will have the chance to see Ambassador Roos and his family at Japanese festivals, sporting events, or even just in the grocery store over the next few years. I hope they will feel as welcome in Japan as Ann and I do.

Until next time,

Jim
