American Citizen Services Section

March 12 - American officers in Embassy Tokyo rely greatly on the knowledge and expertise of our Japanese employees. The teamwork between American and Japanese employees helps us bridge our countries' differences of language and culture. I saw that teamwork in action on a recent visit to the American Citizen Services (ACS) section.

They showed me their work - issuing a passport and a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, providing notary services and assisting residents in Japan who are entitled to federal benefit assistance.

In addition to this routine work, every day they face urgent requests. The ACS staff might have to help a destitute American return to the U.S., issue an emergency passport, assist a family in coping with a death abroad, or locating a missing family member. Our staff also sees five to 10 new babies per day! When a child is born abroad to an American mom or dad, the parents report the birth to the Embassy or Consulate to obtain American citizenship documentation for this child.

To be able to provide the best possible service to Americans in Japan, the section works on an appointment basis. Please click here for more information about the ACS section. If you have a chance to visit, I am sure you will be as impressed as I was by their efficient teamwork and friendly service.

Until next time,

Jim

My wife and I plan a two week vacation to Japan. Should we register/advise the U.S. embassy of our plans? Does the U.S. embassy have any helpful data that we can access for our trip?

Thank you for your time and efforts.

A two-week trip to Japan sounds great - and thanks for thinking of the Embassy. Yes, U.S. citizens who travel or reside abroad can register here. This site will allow you, as an American citizen, to record your foreign trip and residence information that the Department of State can use to communicate with you and assist you in case of an emergency. As far as information about Japan is concerned, check here for Country Specific Information files for Japan.

Have a great trip! - Jim
