Flag Ceremony Launches Shimoda Festival

May 25 - "The foundation of U.S.-Japan friendly relations was constructed at Shimoda." On a cool Saturday morning, Ann and I found ourselves seated in front of a large stone memorial with this inscription. We were joined by about 250 other guests at the opening ceremony of the Black Ship Festival. Here we remembered those who sacrificed their lives during the initial encounters between the United States and Japan at Shimoda in the mid-19th century.

This large stone tablet lies at the base of a steep hill covered with new spring foliage. On either side of the monument were seated two military bands - one a U.S. Navy band from the USS Curtis Wilbur, and the other a Japan Maritime Self Defense Force band from the ship Shirayuki. The announcer asked the audience to stand for a flag-hoisting ceremony.

The conductor of the U.S. Navy band raised his baton, and his band began playing "Kimigayo," the Japanese national anthem. At this moment, two sailors from the USS Curtis Wilbur unfurled the Japanese flag from a pole near the top of the hillside. They saluted it smartly. Next the MSDF band began playing the "Star Spangled Banner" as two Japanese sailors unfurled the Stars and Stripes. They in turn saluted the U.S. flag. Just then a stiff breeze arose causing the two flags to flap noisily in the wind.

During the hour-long ceremony my eyes frequently gazed upon these two flags flying side by side high on the hillside. What a magnificent sight! How appropriate, I thought, that the United States Navy and the Maritime Self Defense Forces each show such respect for the national symbols of their staunch ally. It was the beginning of a magnificent festival.

Hey, check out this YouTube video of the festival.

Until next time,

Jim

I have been to Shimoda with my family and we visited Perry's landing place in Shimoda, an historical place. I too love history especially World History. I am glad that the U.S Military is in Japan.
