This distinctive "koban" is in the Ginza district of Tokyo.
Dec. 10 - Just after starting my morning jog recently, I passed a vigilant policeman standing in front of my neighborhood koban. Although I could not see his face in the pre-dawn darkness, I waved and he acknowledged me with a friendly nod. This policeman's presence in my neighborhood so early in the morning made me feel safe and secure.
A fancy traditional "koban"
My wife Ann knows better than anyone that I frequently become lost in Tokyo. At such times, I look for a koban to ask directions. The Japanese police are always approachable and helpful in these situations. On one occasion, the policeman seemed so worried that I would not comprehend his instructions that he walked with me part way to my destination.
Ann and I much appreciate the efforts of our local koban to develop a relationship of trust with our community. No matter how cold, windy, or wet, a policeman will be on guard at our koban.
A more typical "koban" looks like this.
This year during the Christmas holidays, Ann and I will bring a box of homemade cookies to the policemen at our local koban. We want to share our holiday treats with these hardworking police as a small token of appreciation for their year-round efforts to keep us safe.
Until next time,
Jim
