Aoi-kai

Feb. 10 - The Aoi-kai, an association of locally hired staff working at the American Embassy, recently hosted the American employees to a wonderful celebration to introduce us to Japanese culture.

Aoi-kai volunteers decorated the Embassy auditorium for the party by displaying kites, screens, and auspicious calligraphy.

After the opening ceremony, complete with the traditional breaking open of the sake barrel with wooden mallets, the Embassy chorus entertained us with American and Japanese songs. A renowned calligrapher demonstrated his skilled brushwork.

We have some very artistic employees. At this event they introduced us to a Japanese tea ceremony and helped us try our hands at calligraphy.

Ten employees showcased their flower arrangements. Many employees for the first time experienced pounding rice into mochi. The mother of one employee came to the Embassy to dress several American Embassy staff in Japanese kimonos.

The American employees of the Embassy and their families appreciated the Aoi-kai’s efforts to teach us about the rich culture of our host country.

Until next time,

Jim
