Bountiful California Harvest

Ann marvels at all the fresh fruit.

Aug. 5 - On our recent vacation, Ann and I drove with my sister through California's Central Valley, a rich agricultural region famous for its fruits, vegetables and nuts. This valley is located between California's two mountain ranges.

We arrived in the Central Valley during the harvest for peaches, nectarines, blueberries, plums, and oranges. We passed many wineries and vineyards as well. Driving along the highway, my sister suggested we stop at a fruit stand, where we purchased blueberries, peaches and almonds.

I stood in a grove of oranges after the harvest.

The next day, Ann and I stopped at a large farm where workers were preparing oranges for shipment to Japan. After the trucks loaded with oranges from the field arrived at the plant, workers unloaded, washed and sorted the oranges before loading them into cartons for shipment.

The owner of the farm told me she shipped oranges all over the United States, but that some of her best customers were in Japan and Korea. That day her workers were selecting the largest and most delicious oranges and placing them in cartons bound for Japan.

She gave us some samples of the freshly harvested Valencia oranges. They were delicious. I purchased a large bag to share with my parents and sister's family.

Until next time,

Jim

I will sometimes pop in to read from now on.Please enjoy your days in Japan.
