Mrs. Higashida in front of the Enseiji Temple in Hagi.

Sept. 6 - I love traveling in Japan because I often meet new friends. My recent visit to Hagi was no exception.

I had just visited the Tokoji temple, an impressive building that houses many of the graves of the Mori family that ruled this region for many years in the 17th-19th centuries. After leaving the main temple and reaching the road on the outskirts of the city, I gazed at the map trying to decide whether to board the 100 yen bus or walk down the hill back toward town. Before I could make up my mind, a very nice woman came up to me and said hello. She was also traveling alone and wondered if I wanted a ride back into town.

Exploring the castle town together

I accepted her kind offer, and before I knew it we were visiting Hagi's sights together. She introduced herself as Mrs. Higashida, a retired school teacher. I was in luck, because she knew a great deal about Japanese history, botany, and also Japanese culture.

As we traveled around, she told me about the plants and trees we were seeing, and the significance of the historical sites. I enjoyed my visit to Hagi immensely, and also enjoyed meeting a new friend.

Until next time,

Jim
