Nov. 8 - Deputy Secretary of State William J. Burns arrived in Japan two weeks ago on his first visit to Asia since becoming Deputy Secretary. He met with Japanese officials in the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and with leaders of the two major political parties.

During his visit he reaffirmed the enduring value of the U.S.-Japan Alliance and underscored our truly global partnership. He emphasized that our bilateral relationship also encompasses robust economic ties and an array of people-to-people exchanges.

In planning his visit, Deputy Secretary Burns told us that he wanted to engage with Japan's future leaders, so we arranged for him to speak to a group of Tokyo University students. They demonstrated a keen interest in regional and global affairs, querying the Deputy Secretary on American policies toward North Korea, China, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Tokyo University students listened and asked questions.

His meetings with Japanese political leaders, and his engagement with the leaders of tomorrow, marked a terrific beginning to the Deputy Secretary of State's trip to Asia. His discussions reminded me of the importance of engaging with Japan to sustain our vibrant partnership.

You can now read the full text of the Deputy Secretary's speech at Tokyo University.

Until next time,

Jim
