Japanese American Leadership Delegation

Here's Ann with young guests at the reception.

March 16 - Recently my wife Ann hosted a reception at our home for a delegation of 15 Japanese Americans who were visiting Japan at the invitation of the Center for Global Partnership. This wonderful program brings a small group of Japanese Americans to Japan each year so they can learn about Japanese history and culture, develop relations with Japanese counterparts, and deepen their ties to the land of their ancestors.

I chatted with members of the delegation.

This year the group traveled to Kyoto and Tokyo. They met with Japanese politicians, government officials, artists, and business people. They also visited the United States Embassy for a briefing on Japanese politics, the economy and U.S.-Japan relations. I thought they asked many insightful questions about our relationship and about Japan's role in the world.

Over the course of the evening reception, I spoke individually with many of the Japanese American delegation members. They were full of positive impressions from their visit. I encouraged them to talk to their friends and colleagues about their experiences and to remain active in promoting U.S.-Japan relations.

Guests listen to Ann giving her welcome remarks.

American government officials are always interested in learning the opinions of American citizens in shaping our foreign policy. As Japanese Americans with a good understanding of Japan, these delegation members can influence U.S. policy toward Japan in a positive way. Ann and I agreed that this group will help strengthen our friendly bilateral relationship after they returned to the United States.

Until next time,

Jim

Jim - Many thanks to you and Ann for hosting the reception and welcoming us into your and Ann's home. I very much appreciated your invitation to connect with the U.S. Embassy in Japan and your remarks on the importance in hearing from Japanese-Americans. Thank you again for your hospitality and encouraging us to engage with our government abroad.
