Celebrating Independence Day in America

July 2 - Americans look forward each year to Independence Day on July 4. This date marks the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Many Americans display the Stars and Stripes from their homes on July 4.

Independence Day is a very patriotic occasion for Americans as we recall the courage and fortitude that our ancestors showed in taking the drastic step to seek independence from their mother county of England.

Because Independence Day falls in the warm summertime, Americans traditionally celebrate by engaging in lighthearted outdoor activities. In my hometown of San Diego, California many people enjoy outdoor picnics. Parks in San Diego will be crowded with groups of family and friends on this holiday. Small children might enjoy swings or a merry-go-round. Older children (and many adults) will play a more organized game such as softball or flag football. People will bring large ice chests with cold soft drinks and beer.

I always looked forward to the outdoor barbeque. My family usually grilled chicken or hamburger, but many people also enjoy hot dogs. These dishes might be accompanied with potato salad and a cabbage salad that we call coleslaw. Because California is a major producer of fresh fruits, we always enjoyed peaches, nectarines, grapes, cantaloupe, and watermelons, which are plentiful and inexpensive at this time of year. Of course we decorated our outdoor table with red white and blue paper plates, cups, and napkins.

After darkness falls, watching fireworks is another traditional Independence Day activity. My family and I always went somewhere with a nice view of the fireworks show staged by the Fire Department. Watching the colorful fireworks in the nighttime sky provided an exciting finish to our Independence Day celebration.

Until next time,

Jim
