Time for Giving Thanks

Nov. 19 - I will return to California to celebrate Thanksgiving with my family next week. My parents and elder sister live in San Diego, and my younger sister will also travel there from her home in Northern California. We plan to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal together at my elder sister's home.

Doesn't this turkey look delicious?

This will be the first time since last February that we have all gathered together, and I am very excited to see my family again.

Thanksgiving has always been one of my favorite holidays because it is an occasion to give thanks for our blessings. When a small colony of 53 English settlers in Massachusetts first celebrated Thanksgiving in 1622, they invited 90 Native Americans to join their celebration of a bountiful harvest. These settlers lived a very precarious existence, and they would not have survived their first years in America were it not for the Native Americans who taught them farming and hunting techniques suited to their new environment.

These days, most Americans are no longer directly involved in food production. Yet we live in a society with many food choices thanks to a small number of American farmers who grow and harvest our food.

Celebrating Thanksgiving each year provides us with a wonderful occasion to remember our good fortune and to thank American farmers who produce safe and reliable supplies of food for all of us to enjoy.

Until next time,
