The Power of Ideas

The "Village Under the Pines School"

Aug. 26 - On my recent visit to Hagi, I learned about Yoshida Shoin, one of the great intellectual leaders at the time of the Meiji Restoration. I saw the school where Yoshida Shoin taught his students. Located in a small building with a spare tatami floor, his classroom was called the "Village School Under the Pines."

I was surprised to learn that Yoshida Shoin taught there for only a short period. He believed strongly in strengthening Japan by adopting Western technology. He also accepted students of ability regardless of their rank or position in society.

Although he was executed before reaching age 30, Yoshida Shoin with his innovative ideas helped transform a feudal state into a modern country. His students included a future Prime Minister, a future Defense Minister, industrialists and many other founders of the modern Japanese state.

Yoshida Shoin's grave attracts many visitors

Reflecting over his tragically short life in Hagi, I renewed my appreciation for the power of ideas. Good teachers explain, but great teachers inspire. Yoshida Shoin inspired his students with the power of his ideas.

Until next time,

Jim

I live in Yamaguchi, on the Sanyo coast, and love the whole prefecture. I'm so glad you could enjoy some of Yamaguchi's charm and quiet beauty. I also highly recommend Tsuwano. The streams there are home to ten times as many koi as people live in the city!

Best Regards,
